Get Some Gear, Do Some Good

When Justina Pearsall and her husband Aaron learned of their son’s diagnosis, they moved to Michigan for his care, where the idea for EKG Sportswear came to life.

At my 14 week ultrasound, the OB/GYN found something “abnormal” about my son’s heart.  Although it was too early to tell, he called in the cardiologist at the Children’s Heart Center Nevada the next day.  After another anxious ultrasound, he sat me up and informed me that our son had a heart defect – and it was most likely hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

That was almost 3 years ago.  We moved from Las Vegas to Brighton, Michigan with the aid of family and friends and established ourselves at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.  Once Brady was born, it seemed like everything was moving at triple-speed – first open-heart surgery at 5 days old; his second surgery for his Hemi-Fontan at 5 months old; and his third surgery for his Fontan at 2.5 years old.

When we moved halfway across the country, both my husband and I left our respective careers behind – he was a golf instructor, and I was a small business owner.  When the pandemic hit, all that extra time in isolation opened new opportunities for both of us. I wanted to start an online shop, but I didn’t want it to be just another online retail shop.  I wanted there to be a purpose behind every purchase.  And that was how EKG Sportswear was created.

The logo itself holds more than just brand labeling.  The heartbeat inside that heart isn’t just any heartbeat – that is the heartbeat of Brady, taken from his EKG at 3 days old.  Being able to share such a small detail with everyone that purchases from our shop brings me so much joy and gratitude.

I’ve always believed in giving back as well.  That is why I decided to donate 5.7% of every purchase to Conquering CHD.  The 5.7% represents Brady’s birthday (May 7).  My goal is to continue to grow that donation amount every month and show people that helping others can come from any simple act – even from buying cool clothes.

About Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) – CHD is the most common birth defect and a leading cause of infant death. In 2021, 40,000 babies will be born with CHD in the United States alone, joining the 1.35 million new patients born this year around the world. 1 in 100 people worldwide are diagnosed with CHD.

Thanks to advances in medical technology and surgical procedures, more adults than children are now living with congenital heart disease. CHD is a chronic, lifelong condition that presents significant challenges for the patient and their family. CHD has no cure.

About EKG Sportswear – EKG Sportswear is run by Justina Pearsall, mom to Brady, entrepreneur, and former professional golfer.  The EKG Shop wants to inspire individuals just like their Heart Warrior continues to inspire them each and every day.  Whether it’s through a super soft hoodie or just by visiting the site and sharing personal journeys, the Pearsall’s want to share in their gratitude and love that their son has bestowed upon them. Empowering others to do good is also a very important message they want to spread while making sure we all look good doing it.
